Responsible heating solutions

Excess heat to use with Global DC

The local energy company Nivos has launched a heat recovery plant and the heat transfer to the district heating network. The heat recovery is carried out in cooperation with Global DC data center. Global DC data parlors generate heat, which is collected and directed along the district heating network to the Mäntsälä households. Initially, the waste heat can be collected corresponding to the heating amount around a thousand houses. In this scale the project is the first one in the world.

Due to the collected waste heat, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by up to 40% in Nivos district heating. This is a significant achievement, as the emission reduction in district heating corresponds to the objective EU set for emission reductions in 2030. Heat recycling increases sustainability and in the long-term will also improve the competitiveness of district heating.

Nivos bioenergy plant

The fully automated and unmanned plant has four boilers and a storage tank. The plant's production covers about one third of the energy of the district heating network in the centre of Mäntsälä. The fossil-free heat it produces reduces the carbon dioxide emissions of district heating produced by Nivos by up to 2500 tonnes per year.

Benefits of locating your business to Mäntsälä

Mäntsälä has wide services for you to establish and run your business and it’s an attractive neighbourhood to live in. Also the favorable legislation to store and handle information has led many data center operators to establish business in Finland. The Government of Finland still intends to hold on firmly to this leading position in the world of digitalization and framework necessary for growth of this digital industry will be sustained also in the future.

States that have adopted strict legislation on data protection generally tend to be more favorable to the placement of datacenters than states without or lacking sufficient legal framework of data sovereignty. The legislative environment of Finland is quite different even from the other Nordic countries. In Finland the right of privacy of any communication is a basic right that is inviolable and there is a strong legal protection over governmental surveillance of digital information.

See available plots or find out more about Kapuli:

The local energy supplier Nivos has three 110kV power transmission lines directly from the Hikiä generating plant to the substation at Kapuli Business Park, which improve the dependability of electric power supplies to data centers in the Kapuli area. Currently Kapuli is served by three independent 110 kV power lines from two separate connection points on the national grid. The outgoing transmission line connection at Hikiä has also been duplicated to supply two separate substations. Each of the three 110 kV transmission lines is capable of supplying about 100 MW of electric power to Mäntsälä.

The 110kV Regional Grid

There is no minimum connection limit for the Nivos 110 kV regional network, so a new operating point starting at low peak power may be connected to the regional network by bilateral agreement. This gives you flexibility in timing investments, and the freedom to develop your operations without the constraints of a connection limit.
